You also can take the tensioner off of the head and try pushing it in with your hands. You shouldnt be able to push it in . It sounds like the tensioner is bad. I have seen many of these fail. I made a manual cam chain tensioner for mine so this never happens again to me.
The exhaust valves get real tight when dirt passes through the intake tract. Once you replace the valves or put a very tiny shims in to get back to factory specs inspect your filter and intake boot for cracks.
