5e no longer specifies cone angles because it simplified those away, all 5e cones are triangles with 3 equal sides when looking from the top. So a 15 foot cone is placed on the grid as a triangle with three 15 foot sides. One of the corners must originate from the point of origin, and you can rotate it around that however you'd like. I also had an elevation drawing of the room (small scale cone template works for both). As the characters moved, I told them when obvious magic (like light spells) turned on or off.
