Arkansas aquifers map

Abstract. Sixteen aquifers in Arkansas that currently serve or have served as sources of water supply are described with respect to existing groundwater protection and management programs, geology, hydrologic characteristics, water use, water levels, deductive analysis, projections of hydrologic conditions, and water quality.

Rates of groundwater loss often exceed the rate of recharge due to excessive pumping or drought, which causes water levels in aquifers to drop. This disparity between recharge rates and groundwater losses led to water level declines during 2001-2006, ranging from 0.6 to more than 21 feet in many major Oklahoma aquifers, as shown in Figure 1.Aquifers are ubiquitous, and their water is easy to obtain with low extraction costs. On many occasions, these characteristics lead to overexploitation due to important water level declines, reduction of river base flows, enhanced seawater intrusion, and wetland affection. The forecasted increase in water demands and global warming will impact the …Additional publication details. Water-level altitudes can be used to develop a potentiometric-surface map that represents the altitude at which water would stand in tightly cased wells at any location within the aquifer (Lohman, 1972).As demands on Arkansas’s ground water continue to increase, decision-makers need all available information to ensure the sustainability of this important natural resource. From 1940 through 2006, the U.S. Geological Survey has con-ducted over 300 aquifer tests in Arkansas. Much of these data never have been published.
