Facies sequences are a series of facies whose transitions and relationships are geologically significant with respect to depositional environment (Walker 1984; Reading 1986b ). The term 'sequence' had been co-opted in the sequence stratigraphy literature (Sect. 2.4) to have a more specific meaning.
