Mentioning: 7 - Abstract:The cycads pose classic problems in evolutionary biogeography, owing to their far-flung extant distributions and the sparse fossil records of living genera. A noteworthy example is Tribe Encephalarteae of Family Zamiaceae, today consisting of Encephalartos (Africa) and the Australian genera Lepidozamia and Macrozamia. …Cycads had been noted as an important plant, but there had been confusion about its lack of fossil evidence. Some researchers had asserted that cycads today are identical to their ancestors.Abstract. Modern survivors of previously more diverse lineages are regarded as living fossils, particularly when characterized by morphological stasis. Cycads are often cited as a classic example, reaching their greatest diversity during the Jurassic–Cretaceous (199.6 to 65.5 million years ago) then dwindling to their present diversity of ...Significance: Cycadeoid fossils have no known living descendant, but evidence suggests they might be closely related to flowering plants. Other notable fact: Cycadeoids were the predominant fossil in currently the only national monument that has ever been decommissioned, Fossil Cycad National Monument in South Dakota. The ginkgo ( Ginkgo biloba) is a living fossil, with fossils similar to the modern plant dating back to the Permian, 270 million years ago. The closest living relatives of the clade are the cycads, [4] which share with the extant G. biloba the characteristic of motile sperm. The ginkgo and cycad lineages are thought to have an extremely ancient ...1. Introduction.
