Hexacorallia

The complement of cnidae distinguishes the anthozoan subclasses Hexacorallia and Octocorallia (reviewed in Daly et al., 2003), and morphology of the nematocyst capsule provides the only morphological evidence for monophyly of the hexacorallian order Actiniaria (Reft and Daly, 2012).

The class Anthozoa is subdivided into two subclasses, Hexacorallia and Octocorallia, which have different rotational (radial) body symmetries, being a 6-fold rotational symmetry in Hexacorallia and an 8-fold rotational symmetry in Octocorallia. Black corals (Anthozoa: Antipatharia) are an ecologically and culturally important group of deep-sea cnidarians. However, as the majority of species inhabit depths >50 m, they are relatively understudied. The inaccessibility of well-preserved tissue for species of interest has limited the scope of molecular analysis, and as a result only a small number of antipatharian mitochondrial genomes ... Anthozoa is a class of marine invertebrates which includes the sea anemones, stony corals and soft corals. Adult anthozoans are almost all attached to the seabed, while their larvae can disperse as part of the plankton. The basic unit of the adult is the polyp; this consists of a cylindrical column topped by a disc with a central mouth ... R.L. Previously, it has been found that species of the zoanthid genus Zoanthus (Cnidaria: Hexacorallia) possess high levels of intrageneric ITS-rDNA sequence variation both between congeners and also within one species, Zoanthus sansibaricus, resulting in an uncertain internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA (ITS-rDNA) phylogeny for this group. For the first time, the secondary structures of ...The class Anthozoa is currently recognized as a natural group (monophyletic clade) formed by two main clades accepted as subclass ranks: Hexacorallia and Octocorallia (Daly et al. 2007).Fossils of Anthozoa, those representing hexacorallians , have been the basis for the hypothesis that the group had its onset between the Lower Cambrian in the Paleozoic (~540 million years ago) (Han et al. 2010 ... ….
