In my CS6 x64, when using the pen tool for adding points, the smart guides don't show. However, if you add a point, then use the direct selection arrow tool to move the point, THEN you get the smart guides. Sorted by: 1. One option is to change the menu to always lock the guides. (This used to be the default). Choose View > Guides > Lock Guides, then any guide you create or drag from a ruler will automatically be locked when you let go of it.
