Ordovician Period, Interval of geologic time, 485.4–443.4 million years ago, the second oldest period of the Paleozoic Era. It follows the Cambrian and precedes the Silurian Period. During the Ordovician, many of the landmasses were aligned in the tropics.The Paleozoic era comprises from oldest to youngest the following six geologic periods: Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, and Permian.Cenozoic Era, third of the major eras of Earth’s history, beginning about 66 million years ago and extending to the present. It was the interval of time during which the continents assumed their modern configuration and geographic positions and during which Earth’s flora and fauna evolved toward those of the present.
