Cretac Res 19, 745-775 (1998).Sedimentary rocks rich in organic matter often have lower thermal conductivities than other rock types. As a result of this natural insulating effect, temperature gradients in carbonaceous strata may become elevated even under conditions of low to average heat flow, causing underlying rocks to reach higher temperatures and higher thermal maturities than would otherwise occur.Fig. 3--A fresh exposure of lower Pierre-upper Niobrara lithology at location A. The bentonite beds marking the basal Pierre can be seen near the center of the picture. At least 24 separate bentonite beds are exposed in the Pierre Shale from the center to the top of the picture.

This specimen (SDSMT 452) is was found in the Pierre Shale (Campanian) near the spillway of Elm Lake, Brown County, South Dakota. It was cited and extensively figured in Dale Russell's 1967 benchmark publication (Systematics and Morphology of American Mosasaurs), and is the subject of a new paper currently in preparation. The museum also houses ...In a broad sense, "nautiloid" refers to a major cephalopod subclass or collection of subclasses ( Nautiloidea sensu lato ). Nautiloids are typically considered one of three main groups of cephalopods, along with the extinct ammonoids (ammonites) and living coleoids (such as squid, octopus, and kin). While ammonoids and coleoids are monophyletic ...To stimulate pyrite oxidation in the selected shale samples, a soxhlet extractor was modified to continually drip distilled water over the shale chips contained within a cellulose thimble, before being collected in a flask, in a setup suggested by Pedro (1961) (Fig. 1).The condenser was left open, allowing exchange with the atmosphere; no attempt was made to control/monitor oxygen and carbon ...The Fox Hills conformably overlies the Pierre Shale and conformably and disconformably underlies and interfingers with the Hell Creek Formation; it occurs in about the western two-thirds of the state. A suite of siltstone samples from the Upper Cretaceous Pierre Shale from the contact zone of a 130-cm thick igneous dike near Wolcott, Colorado, U.S.A., was taken from the contact to 170 cm from the dike to study the effects of temperature on the organic matter. Pelecypods the size of Inoceramus of the Pierre Shale are found today in shallow waters (Gill and Cobban, 1966).
