There are currently 326 different skill gems and 205 support gems in the game, for a total of 531. That way, you can immediately right click the gem level-up icon once you re-equip it, instead of having to wait for it to level again. I don't know about you, but I constantly have to downlevel and relevel gems just because of the darn instinct to level up whatever gems I see in my sidebar.
