The Potawatomi people were primarily hunters, fishers, farmers, and gatherers, hunting deer, elk, and beaver for food and other materials, including the animals’ skins and furs. Potawatomi men were hunters, carrying out the activity individually or collectively in small groups; they also cultivated tobacco.The Potawatomi were primarily farming people. The women planted and harvested corn, beans, squash, and tobacco, as well as gathering wild rice and berries. The men hunted deer, elk, and wild birds and caught fish. The Potawatomis also tapped trees for maple syrup as Michigan people do today.
