Jan 1, 2007 · Zoophycos is a complex and enigmatic ichnofossil that has challenged generations of geologists and ichnologists for over a century. Till now, its producer or producers remain elusive. This ichnofossil is cosmopolitan and it occurs in diverse marine sedimentary facies ranging from Palaeozoic to Holocene. Zoophycos is most common in sediments deposited during glacial times and when the sedimentation rate was intermediate and primary production was high and seasonal. Occurrences of Zoophycos elsewhere support a similar relationship with seasonal organic-matter deposition. This is particularly significant considering that seasonality of organic ...Thalassinoides suevicus, Tisoa siphonalis, Zoophycos isp. and Zoophycos brianteus, reported for the first time from the early Cretaceous of Algeria. These traces are characteristics of the Zoophycos ichnofacies, representing deep and oxygen-restricted environments. This ichno-association together with litho-biofacies contents are suggesting ...

Facies F3 (Figs. 3C and 6) is identified in the lower Pelitic Formation of Early to Middle Eocene age and the upper part of the Sandstone and Pelitic Formation of Upper Oligocene age (Fig. 3). It consists of …The Zoophycos structures observed in the Shiramazu Formation are characterized by having a distinct axial shaft and helically coiled spreite with fecal pellets (Fig. 3A). The fecal pellets that comprise laminae in the spreite are usu-ally composed of relatively light-colored mud (Fig. 3B). In some Zoophycos occurring below a volcanic ash layer ...As such, lobed Zoophycos are rare in the Palaeozoic but common in post-Palaeozoic times. This study reports an unusually lobate Zoophycos from the early Permian Tahkandit Limestone (Brabb and Grant, 1971) of the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, east-central Alaska. Lithofacies analysis shows that these sediments were deposited in inner ramp, middle ramp and offshore (outer …It is demonstrated that the Zoophycos ‐producers from the complex types of Zoophycos in storm sequences were opportunistic organisms (r‐strategists). This study reveals storm‐generated physical and biogenic structures and textures and provides a good ichnological method to identify storm deposits.Zoophycos is a well-known trace fossil common throughout the Phanerozoic. The Zoophycos ichnocoenosis was produced during a further later but relatively long stage after the emplacement of the turbidites, indicating a much more reducing bottom-water condition.Devonian occurrences of Zoophycos are often observed in successions representing shelfal deposits and have been interpreted as the first expansion of this trace fossil during the Paleozoic. Dense Zoophycos occurrences in storm-generated Paleozoic beds have been interpreted as the result of ecological opportunist strategy when the tracemaker exploited quiet, nutrient garden substrates after storms.Type - D (bar length 3 cm).
